Our mission is to create and enable an environment where profound meetings can take place. We work actively with representation through our ensemble as well as the dance genres that our expression originates from.
Dance performances is our tool to explore and show how prejudice can become insights, that we as human beings need each other and our differences, and that we are in constant connection and influence on one another.
We see our individual differences as our strength, We allow and celebrate each persons uniqueness as wells as their dance technics, dance style and traditions. The dance company actively works for diversity, for a society where everyone is needed and is represented, I am because you are: we are – SOMOS!
SOMOS is a unique international project based dance company, A cultural exchange, designed to allow dancers from Sweden and Cuba to meet. Mixing Afro-Cuban- dance technics, with Sabar, Vouging/Waacking, Hip-Hop, Popping, House and Contemporary dance. There is simply no other dance company like SOMOS in Sweden today!
In times like these, burdened by tension between different ethnic groups, based on prejudice that grow from lack of knowledge and experiences of the "other", it is important to see the bigger picture and realize that I am, because we are. On a global scale, but also in the smallest moments, it is important to understand that we are all interdependent. We are all in constant relation to each other. What I do affects the person standing next to me. What I say and do always has consequences. I am because you are, we are, SOMOS.
SOMOS – For children and young people
SOMOS is much more than a dance performance; We are a non-profit association with children and young people as our main target audience. We invite children and young people from different socio-cultural environments and create a meeting place with dance as our tool. The project is based on plurality, and we use our vision of seeing differences as strengths to explore the issues of identity, belonging, racism, ethnicity and acceptance. It is important for us to present performing arts professionals with a multicultural background, demonstrating representation by plurality.
The project itself serves an example of our methodology; we can show children and young people how we have come together as a group despite our potential differences. Therefore, we recommend that the performance is combined with a workshop, where the children and young adults can experience and participate through dance and movement, a workshop where we give examples of our different dance styles and expressions and have open conversations around identity and acceptance.
